condition: like new
A Guide to Our Federal Lands – January 1, 1984 by National Geographic Society (Author).
Describes 664 federally owned areas (national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges & scenic/recreational areas.

A companion to the National Geographic Society's book Our Threatened Inheritance: National Treasures of the United States, this guide is a unique compendium of federal areas of scenic and recreational importance that are open to the public.

They include: 56 national parks, 57 national monuments (excluded were those of primarily historical interest) 4 national lake-shores, 11 national seashores, 19 national recreation areas, 6 national rivers or scenic river-ways, 13 national preserves, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail-all administered by the National Park Service (NPS). 143 national forests, 19 national grasslands, and the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails-all administered by the Forest Service. 257 national wildlife refuges, with varying official names, that are open to the public. 76 areas of scenic and recreational interest within 46 Bureau of Land Management (BLM) districts. These less well known and often remote sites, administered for multiple uses, generally lack visitor facilities. Increased visitor use would threaten a few BLM areas covered in our book; those areas do not appear in the guide.
